Passing Criteria & Score Details

No Fixed
Minimum Passing Score
NTA does not set a universal cutoff. Each university and course releases its own merit-based cutoff after the result.
250
Max Marks per Subject
50 questions × 5 marks each. A score above 180+ in domain subjects is generally considered strong.
45% / 40%
Class 12 Min % to Appear
General: 45% aggregate in Class 12. SC/ST/OBC: 40%. Check individual university requirements separately.
Normalised
Score Calculation Method
NTA uses normalisation for multi-shift exams to ensure fairness across different question paper sets and dates.

Scoring Strategy: +5 for correct, −1 for wrong, 0 for unattempted. Avoid random guessing. If you eliminate 2 options and are fairly confident, attempt the question. Focus on accuracy over attempt count. Scoring 180+ per subject (72%) is a competitive target for top university admissions.

Preparation Tips (Expert-Backed)

Master NCERT First

CUET domain syllabus is 100% NCERT Class 12. Complete every chapter thoroughly — this also strengthens your board exam prep simultaneously.

Make a Daily Timetable

Divide daily slots for language, domain subjects and general test. Dedicate at least 1–2 hours specifically to CUET practice beyond board prep.

Solve PYQs & Mock Tests

Solve 3–5 years of CUET previous year papers per subject. Attempt official NTA mock tests to build CBT familiarity and time management.

Analyse Every Mock Test

After each mock, review wrong and skipped questions. Maintain a mistake log. Identify weak topics and revise them before the next practice session.

Section-wise Strategy

Language: focus on comprehension & vocabulary. Domain: stick to NCERT concepts. General Test: practice reasoning & current affairs daily from authentic sources.

Pick Subjects Smartly

Choose subjects that match the requirements of courses/universities you're targeting. Attempting more subjects adds cost and exam burden without guarantee of benefit.

Avoid Negative Marking Traps

With −1 for wrong answers, accuracy beats attempt count. Skip questions you are fully unsure about. Eliminate options logically before attempting borderline questions.

Revision in Last 2 Weeks

Stop covering new topics. Focus only on revision, short notes, and 2–3 full-length mock tests per week. Ensure good sleep and a calm mindset going into exam day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a fixed passing score or cutoff in CUET UG 2026?
No, NTA does not set a universal minimum passing score for CUET. Each participating university independently releases its own course-wise cutoff scores after the results are declared. Your CUET score is compared against the university's cutoff during counselling.
Can a Class 12 appearing student apply for CUET UG 2026?
Yes. Students who are currently appearing in the Class 12 board exams in 2026 are eligible to apply for CUET UG 2026. However, they must meet the university's admission eligibility requirements (marks, subject combinations) at the time of counselling and admission.
Can I choose a domain subject I didn't study in Class 12?
Yes — this is a new rule for CUET UG 2026. NTA and UGC have removed the previous subject restriction, meaning you can choose any domain subject regardless of your Class 12 stream. However, the university you're applying to may still require specific subject combinations for admission, so always verify with the university portal.
How many times can I attempt CUET UG?
There is no restriction on the number of CUET UG attempts. You can appear every year as long as you meet the basic eligibility criteria. However, your CUET score is valid only for one year (the academic session for which it is issued), so scores cannot be carried forward to the next year.
What happens if I make a mistake in my application form?
NTA provides an official correction window (in 2026, it was February 9–11) during which you can edit specific fields like name, date of birth, gender, category, photograph, and Class 10/12 details. Once the correction window closes, no further changes are allowed. No corrections are permitted post-payment outside the window.
Is NCERT enough for CUET domain subject preparation?
NCERT Class 12 textbooks are the primary and most reliable source for all domain subjects in CUET. Toppers consistently recommend completing NCERT thoroughly before attempting MCQs and previous year papers. For language and general test sections, additional practice through mock tests and current affairs reading is advisable.
Do I need to register separately for each university after the exam?
Yes. After CUET results are declared, you must separately register on the admission portal of each university you wish to apply to. Each university runs its own counselling, merit list and seat allotment process. CUET registration alone does not complete admission to any university.
What is the exam pattern change in CUET UG 2026 compared to 2025?
Key changes in 2026: (1) Total subjects reduced from 63 to 37 — six subjects discontinued. (2) All papers are now a uniform 60 minutes with 50 compulsory questions — no optional questions. (3) No subject restriction based on Class 12 stream. (4) Discontinued subject admissions (Entrepreneurship etc.) now based on General Aptitude Test scores. (5) Max subjects reduced from 6 to 5 per candidate.
When will the CUET UG 2026 result be declared?
The CUET UG 2026 result is expected to be declared in late July 2026, after the exam concludes on May 31, 2026. The scorecard will be available on the official NTA CUET portal. After the result, universities will begin releasing their individual merit lists and counselling schedules.
Can I prepare for CUET without coaching?
Yes. With the right strategy, NCERT books, official mock tests, and previous year question papers, self-study is absolutely viable for CUET. Since the domain syllabus directly mirrors Class 12 NCERT, focused board exam preparation significantly overlaps with CUET preparation. Consistency and regular mock test practice are the key differentiators.
